Black Static #28 is currently off at the printers and should be mailing out shortly, so it's time to let the cat out of the bag as to what I've reviewed in the Case Notes section:-

Bring On the Jubilee: Christopher Fowler

To mark his 25th year as a writer of prize winning short stories, PS Publishing released Red Gloves, a collection of twenty five short stories in two volumes. I've reviewed that as well as the two latest Bryant & May novels, Off the Rails and The Memory of Blood, and Christopher's latest stand-alone novel, Hell Train. We also have an interview with the author and, thanks to the generosity of Transworld, an easy to enter competition in which four people can win the two Bryant & May books reviewed and one lucky entrant will scoop the entire nine volume series.

The Game's Afoot: Holmes and Horror

Reviews of three titles that juxtapose Sherlock Holmes and the supernatural, the anthology Gaslight Arcanum edited by J. R. Campbell & Charles Prepolec, William Meikle's novella Sherlock Holmes: Revenant and Barbara Roden's story collection The Thames Horror and Other Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Magazine Spotlight: Morpheus Tales #16

This is intended to be the first in a semi-regular feature in which I take a look at what's on offer from other magazines in the horror genre, and we kick off with Morpheus Tales edited by Adam Bradley.

I have a title lined up for the following issue, but nothing after that, and if I don't hear from interested parties then the feature will be quietly dropped. So, if you'd like to have your magazine considered for review in Black Static then please get in contact with me by writing to

NB: Please do ask first, don't just send a copy in. I am only reviewing one title per issue and that will be by prior agreement, as I don't want to get swamped with review copies.

The Children of the Night

April 20th is the centenary of Bram Stoker's death, and so I decided to review four big, fat anthologies of vampire fiction - Teeth edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling, Blood and other cravings edited by Ellen Datlow, Evolve Two: Vampire Stories of the Future Undead edited by Nancy Kilpatrick and Dead Red Heart: Australian Vampire Stories edited by Russell B. Farr

With two 2012 issues under my belt it's time to start annoying people with statistics again. So far this year I have reviewed 24 titles, and thirteen of them have been written or edited by women, just over 50%. That's running well ahead of my 'books received' figure of 25%, but the figure is so high because of a predominantly female focus in issue #27 to mark 'Women in Horror Recognition Month', and I anticipate that the percentage will fall throughout the year to a more representative proportion of books reviewed.

Of course, that could change if I start receiving more books written or edited by women...

The total figure for titles reviewed is slightly down on last year, and I'm not sure if that's down to me growing more long winded in my old age or a shorter Case Notes section on account of Andy insisting on cluttering the magazine up with more of that pesky fiction.

Anyway, I have a writer lined up to feature in #29, though it's not set in stone as I haven't yet read his books and might not like them. Beyond that, I plan to drop the author interview for a couple of issues, and use the extra space to clear some of the review backlog - I haven't quite made up my mind, but I'm thinking it might be a good idea to make #30 a short story special and for #31 concentrate on novels.

I also have a novella focus planned for #29, with sixteen titles pencilled in already, but I can squeeze in a couple more, so if you've recently published a novella in the horror genre, please get in touch. Only one of my sixteen is by a woman, so in the interests of a balanced feature Id' particularly welcome and will prioritise work from female writers.

All queries to and, as ever, the usual caveat that an expression of interest does not guarantee if or when a review will be done.
