*sigh*
The noughties... decade of the remake. You know, with all these much-loved classics from my childhood being remade, it almost feels as if someone is trying to tease the disposable income I now have in my pocket (which I didn't have when I was eight) by convincing me that I can recapture my childhood without having to put up with sub-par special effects. But that would be cynical. Hollywood wouldn't do that.
Robocop hurts the most... I thought it was too small and over-looked, not to mention run thoroughly into the ground by the plethora of sequels to be remade... I thought it was safe. I suppose I should start saving up for the live-action Thundercats movie.

Yes, things are so bad, overall (it's hard to pick even a best film of the year, nowadays) ... that I suspect we'll soon be calling this decade the naughties.
Good news...
A remake of The Champions has (at last!) been announced.
Bad news... it's going to star Tom Cruise.

On the other hand, good films still get made. I remember the week back in February when There Will Be Blood, Juno *and* The Diving Bell and the Butterfly all opened in the same weekend. Diving Bell... though an American film, is in French and one thing that wouldn't have been conceivable a decade ago was that a subtitled film could play a full week's run (not just the one-off "director's chair" showing) and find an audience. Inthe last month or so, The Baader Meinhof Complex (good) and Waltz With Bashir (stunning) have had week-long runs at local multiplexes. If Hollywood films don't cut it, even ones that "just" set out to entertain, who's to blame audiences for seeking something different?

"Ashes of Time Redux" was an intriguing title but the film was more than confusing and I did get impatient with its slowness. Also I wondered if the director was playing games with his western audience by naming a handsome swordsman Hung Qi. The musical soundtrack seemed western rather than eastern but my musical expertise is zero.
I can't recommend "Ashes of Time Redux"

I don't feel very optimistic about The Left Hand of Darkness, but I suppose it can't get worse than Scifi Channel's "Earthsea"... (which I caught on TV on New Year's Eve--it took me ten minutes of movies to realise that yes, this was Earthsea seen through a set of thick distorting lenses...)

What saddens me about remakes is 1) often the original is still good, if dated, and 2) there are soooo many good stories out there unfilmed - just pick up a Black Static, Interzone, or Crimewave...

Ricky Gervais' new film seems to have a skiffy theme
