Just finished this issue which I thoroughly enjoyed. My favourite stories were by Noah Wareness, Matthew Cheney and Stephen Hargadon. Loved the in depth interview with Carole Johnstone too.

Another solid issue. The non-fiction was a delight as always with strong columns and a superb interview with Carole Johnstone. I found the fiction this time around to be a mixed bag, no poor stories just a matter of personal taste.
Be Light. Be Pure. Be Close to Heaven. - Sara Saab
A fascinating story to open the issue with that in lesser hands could have veered into excessive description but instead details the thought processes of the characters in an interesting and balanced way with some wonderful prose.
Scarecrow - Alyssa Wong
It's my feeling that second-person narrative works best when kept purposely gender neutral and incidental detail kept to a minimum. In the case of this story the character is named along with several of their associates and I just found myself feeling at a remove from the story. Not sure what the choice of narrative viewpoint bought to an otherwise interesting story.
Whatever Happened to Marly and Lanna - Noah Wareness
The type of fractured narrative that is a staple of the fiction that is often to be found in the pages of Black Static. Events are recounted without the author feeling the need to over-explain and the reader trusted to make their own connections. An evocative tale and an author to lookout for in future.
Patrimony - Matthew Cheney
Another intriguing story, which is often the case with the fiction in Black Static, had me still thinking about it long after I'd read it despite a last line that nearly derailed the previous good work of the author.
Goat Eyes - David D. Levine
Again second-person isn't to my taste but I did find the story engrossing and the twist was both unexpected and nicely delivered.
December Skin - Kristi DeMeester
A superbly crafted short tale that is the most atmospheric of this issues fiction.
The Bury Line - Stephen Hargadon
The pick of the fiction for me. A delightful prose style that grabbed my attention from the start and a sense of pacing that carried me through to a perfect conclusion. The promise shown in his earlier story 'A World of Trevor' is built upon and I expect we will see much more of Hargadon's work gracing future issues of Black Static.
