There's no easy way to say this.

For those who haven't heard the sad news via Facebook or elsewhere, writer Joel Lane passed away in his sleep on Monday night.

There have been a lot of writer deaths this year, but this one touches us closer.

Joel appeared in the very first issue of Black Static, and his story "My Stone Desire" won the British Fantasy Award.

He was a regular contributor to the magazine thereafter, to Crimewave also, and before that to The Third Alternative.

He was family, and he'll be missed.

This is incredibly sad and quietly devastating news. As you rightly say Pete, Joel was family.

I am shocked and very saddened by the sudden death of Joel Lane as reported yesterday. I knew him face to face intermittently since the late 1980s and frequently on-line. He will be remembered as a great fiction and poetry writer, a righter of wrongs, a wry humourist, a dark visionary, an astute commentator on literature and worldly affairs, and someone who, one senses, sometimes found life difficult yet fulfilling, thus helping others to fulfil themselves and overcome their own difficulties. I shall miss him much. He won the World Fantasy Award for best author’s collection only a few weeks before his death. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP Joel.
Des

Terribly sad news. Glad to have met him, at one of Peter Coleborn's balti evenings. I remember he rhapsodized about your work, Des - I had your Best of with me at the time. I loved The Witnesses Are Gone. Super writer.

Totally shocked and saddened by the news. I first met Joel in October 1992 at a singing for "Darklands" and I've just spent some time wandering around the house picking up his poetry collections or short story collections and all the "Best ofs" and other books he had a story in. The only crumb of comfort to take from them is the witty and weird comments he wrote when dedicating them especially about my doppleganger, that other Ian Hunter who used to front some popular beat combo, and of course, he was also a past poetry editor for the BFS' "Dark Horizons".

As I mentioned elsewhere, he had everything as a writer, he could write anything - novels, short stories, poems, criticism, and now we don't have him or his wonderful words anymore.

Ian

Thanks.
Just put up a picture of my current Joel Lane book collection, excluding all the books with just one item by him in it! http://dflewisreviews.wordpress.com/147 ... mment-1395
Can kick myself that I was too late to get FURNACES.

PS still have copies available Des.

I picked a copy up at FantasyCon 2012 but was too shy to go up to get it signed by Joel. From what I have seen said about the man on Facebook and various blogs, I really shouldn't have been worried about approaching him. Last night I read 'The Witnesses are Gone' which is a masterclass in the depiction of obsession and madness.

I've written a few thoughts about the loss of a fabulous writer and supportive editor, who will be missed very much.

This posting also touches on The Third Alternative, Last Rites and Resurrections (where I first encountered Joel's work)and the current of fiction that Joel played such a big part in shaping.

http://rosannerabinowitz.wordpress.com/ ... d-fantasy/

I've also included links to other tributes to Joel at the end. The list is by no means comprehensive so if anyone has anything to add to it feel free to let me know!
