Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are (the things on) your branches...

Ian Hunter's 'A Christmas Opporchancity' is a great story, perfect way to end my day at work. I can easily imagine it as a short film, too. Someone should do that, a bunch of short Christmas horrors. The Twelve Days of Christmas, with twelve ten-minute movies. I'd watch it.

I must just point out that, despite the similarities in theme, I certainly wasn't looking over Ian's shoulder when writing my story. I mean, if I had been, someone would definitely have been taking the odd sheep. I mean, the odd ones are the most attractive, right?

Day 12 and "Honour Christmas In Your Heart" from Stephen Whitehead, which could be a sort of sequel to Ian's story, those growths mutating and camouflaging themselves as Christmas baubles to once again take human life in the future. I think the real strength of the story though lies in the idea and hints of a society without any appreciation of Christmas, something lost to time and circumstance.

Day 20 - Ed Fortune

Four places left, and one writer who, I am led to believe, is frantically scribbling away to grab one of the last slots.

Day 13 and a heartwarming, albeit also uniquely odd, vision of first contact from Lexi MacRae with "The Dog That Barked". Where do old astronauts go?

A story of seasonal loss and misadventure on Day14 from Ray Cluley with "The Rain Deer", a great little tale that does everything right, Leah's situation made all the more disturbing because we can only surmise what she is running from/to, a desperate woman in desperate circumstances and falling fast, but with a hint of triumph at the end, albeit bittersweet.

Thank you, Pete. I've still gotta catch up with my reading, a few stories as a Sunday treat perhaps...

Day 15 and we have the post-apocalypse Christmas courtesy of Alan Morgan's "Wight Christmas", an elegantly bizarre and witty variation on the zombie trope.

LOVED 'Blue Splendor'. Fantastic stuff in just six sentences. Now to backtrack a little a read the previous few days...

Day 16 and Todd Banks' "Blue Splendor" put me very much in mind of Steve Rasnic Tem's estate agent story from Crimewave. The same economy with words, each one made to count, all leading up to the devastating end twist. Good stuff.

And then there was one...

Day 17 and a clever angel/devil piece with "Amy's First" by Henry Szabranski, with some evocative writing and a neat twist at the end.
