...Is a pain in the, erm, kneecap?

I've just posted a short-short story (is 750 words too long for flash?), St James Infirmary Blues, on my web-site and was hoping I could persuade someone to read it and actually give constructive criticism. (i.e. it's bad because..., or possibly, it's good because...)

And in a few months, I'm hoping to have the second draft of my science-fiction/near future novel sorted (about 80 000 words) and will be looking for more critics. Pretty please and will pay in pints/return of service/anything as long as it doesn't involve selling my body. All I've got out of my family and friends for the first draft was that it's good. As my sister refused to feed me unless I completed a certain wordage a week and her husband demanded the latest installment every time I darkened their door, I assume that they mean it, but it doesn't help me fill plot holes, etc.

Jo,

Why don't you join an online crit group? There's critters and several others. Check out www.sfwa.org -- they'll have a list of resources etc.

Alternatively, there's the British Science Fiction Association's Orbiter groups. Despite the BSFA bigwigs not really having a clue about us (okay, I didn't make it to the 2007 AGM, but at the 2006 AGM they had to have Orbiters explained to them ) they're really very good - the number of members and the turnaround times are ideal. Only downside is that you need to be a BSFA member anyway, but frankly that costs peanuts and it's worth it for Matrix/Vector/Focus alone.

Thanks everyone, particularly Roy and Ian for their helpful critiques.

Following advice, I've just joined The Critters Writers' Workshop, which was on SFWA and if I have time, I may look at the BSFA's Orbiters.

And thanks for not pointing out my obvious error. I'm going to go write "I before e except after c" a hundred times ;)
