Would I need to read the others first?

No. There are a few in-jokes and details that you won't pick up on, Ray, but you don't need them. It's perfectly self-contained.

I'll give it a go then. I've picked it up a few times, then put it back due to my 'to read' pile (becoming my 'too much to read' pile), but fancy something different so may indulge.

These days, you could look at 'The Culture' on Wikipedia.

Perhaps have a skim-read, or use it as a reference if you find anything confusing.

There is an in-joke towards the end, which is a major bomb to people who've read some of the other novels, but it doesn't matter if you haven't.

Late to the party here, still finding my way round the site...

But Surface Detail is definitely one of my favourite Culture novels and is heartily recommended to anyone. Oh, and Rob, Falling Outside...quickly became one of my top Ships in what I'm sure you'll agree is a competetive field!
