I wonder if this is something an Interzone reader would enjoy taking on and developing? Adding details, friends, images, customising, you name it, whatever you wanted. This isn't just me being lazy, it might also be an ideal way to get more involved with the magazine?

The position pays 30 grand a year and a company car.

As much as I need the money, it'd take twice that offer to get me to so much as log on to MySpace once a day. *shudders*

So I'm not the only one who thinks it's ugly, godawful and a pain to look at?

Of course, the short-of-time, can't-be-bothered-if-it's-not-really-user-friendly, semi-luddite busybody that I am also thinks Second Life is a 'geeks only' club that is not worth the trouble to figure out how the hell to navigate the bloody thing.

But some of you might disagree *cough*PaulRaven*cough*; *cough*JasonStoddard*cough*

Is Facebook any good?

I have a MySpace and a Facebook account - and they both have their uses. Before I joined MySpace, I had about 100 visitors to my blog per week. But after putting a link to the blog on my MySpace page, that traffic increased to almost 100 per day.

Yeah, but what are they actually for?

I use them to promote my writing. So, I use them for: Networking. Meeting people. Building contacts. Sharing information. Making friends. Interacting. Spreading the word. Building a brand. Finding and interacting with potential readers.

I think they all have their uses, to be honest, but you have to have the time available. MySpace used to chew two hours out of every day to no gain for me, so I dropped it - because it had no redeeming features beyond contacting people I already knew unless I invested considerable time in it. And the ugliness, and the spam, and the lining of Murdoch's pocket ... but it has its uses, and its fans, as does Facebook. If I ever get the volume of work to let me go full-time freelance, maybe I'll use both. In the meantime, email will have to do.

I have a mySpace page, but I never really did anything with it (and yep, it's pretty ugly--and hard as nails to maintain).

I use facebook to connect with old high school friends from London with whom I'd lost contact, and it's pretty handy (at least I've figured out how it works...).

Fifty grand, a company car, an engraved iPod Nano, and a guaranteed acceptance for every story submitted to Interzone, final offer.

But then we'd get depressed, convinced as we were that our work had no worth and had only been accepted to curry favour, etc

I'm not much on blogging, so I'm not especially interested. But if no one else steps forward in the next week, I think I can get over my initial knee-jerk reaction of "no" and give it a couple of hours a week. Would that be enough?

I've had a MySpace page for close to a couple of years, and a Facebook page for just over half that long. Facebook is really geared to college/high school students, and I've found that it's more restrictive a platform in that regard (it's all about "networks" you belong to). MySpace, while it skews young, is much more of a free-for-all, in that anyone can "Friend" anyone else, find folks with similar interests, etc.

That said, they're all ugly to look at. But it's a "social networking" site, and the idea is for it to be simple to use, not aesthetic. It accomplishes that. Porn folk and pyramid schemers are trying harder and harder to turn it into a spam-for-all. But I've met artists and authors who I'd never have otherwise via the site, as well as old classmates I hadn't thought of in years. Plus, it's free, and gets your name out. Can't beat that.

Second Life, on the other hand, left me completely flummoxed.
