Have a care Carole. A lot of editors are vegetarians

Finished reading this issue now (was a delay as I was also reading Apartment 16 and didn't want to read the interview/review until I finished that fine book).

Thought the columns were excellent as usual - it just goes without saying. And the Nevill interview was superb - really interesting stuff.

Onto the fiction:

Some of the Campaign for Real Fear stories worked for me and some didn't. These worked for me: See You Later, Cuckoo, Dreadless. But special mention has to be given to Infected WIth Death by John Fagan. I thought it was incredible, the ending a real sucker punch which brought tears to my eyes and which meant I actually couldn't continue reading the magazine for the remainder of the day. It just totally blew me away with a real sense of dread. A truly horrible feeling.

"Orinoco" - another great story from the quiet pen of Nina Allen. Beautifully written and delectably put together.

"Between A Rock And A Hard Place" - good sustained piece of 'chase' writing with all the tension and believeability of the real thing. Reminded me of being out at night myself (although I always ensure I'm safe by making sure I walk close behind some girl).

"A Man Of Ice And Sorrow" - I really wanted to be won over by this, as I've yet to find an Unsworth story that's really grabbed me and I'm sure I'm missing something. And then this story almost did it, pulling me through with some real emotion, excellently written, until the very last lines which had me muttering obscenities under my breath and damn well ruined it for me. It just didn't work, actually made me angry (not a bad reaction, I must admit). It would have been far more effective for the narrator to have upturned the snowman's frown into a smile! Grrr!

"The Obscure Bird" - Another fine story from Nick. Intelligent, subtle, almost mainstream then 'obscure' just at the point that it needed to be. Excellent.

"Tu Sufrimiento Shall Protect Us" - This was incredibly powerful. An excellent concept married to some great storytelling. Totally believeable throughout which made it all the more horrific.

Ultimately this issue was superb. 9 1/2 stars out of ten from me. The other 1/2 if the Unsworth ending was different!

Sorry Simon! My reaction was so extreme because I liked the story so much - if that makes sense!

Another fine review. Not that I'm biased, mind you!

Wow. What a thorough and flattering review by SF Signal.

I enjoyed all the stories in this issue, particularly the ending to Simon's snowman story.
