Just got a review copy of this book, a retrospective volume marking twenty years of "The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror", with editor Stephen Jones making his selection and one story representing each year between 1989 - 2008.

Strange - I was thinking of No Sharks in the Med only yesterday, that one had a real effect on me when I was much younger. I was wondering if there had been an anthology focusing on 'holiday' horror... anyone?

I also ordred a couple of others this week on your reccomendation. I always enjoy your reviews, but this issue you were particularly persuasive regarding Slights and The Darkening.

Those are both really good books I think, the Warren especially, and they're both up for Australian Dark Shadows awards.

Been dipping into "Best of the Best", and Stephen Jones has some fascinating reminiscences. Seems each edition was a fight to keep the non-fiction down to manageable proportions and find acceptable cover art. He also records the one time in his career when he's faced censorship, with Roberta Lannes' story "Apostate in Denim" withdrawn from #3 because people at Robinson 'vehemently objected to the content of the story and refused to include it'. I now want to read that story.

The book also has appendices listing every story that has appeared in "Best New Horror". Surprising to note only one story apiece from Joe Lansdale (#19), Peter Crowther (#20) and Stephen King (#20), and nothing at all from Gary Braunbeck.
