Waterstones at Deansgate used to be SF central!
Too right about managers disallowing staff to make local decisions. I helped alot to build up the SF section in the Waterstones where I worked (E*****), including doing the buying for that sections. Did well - very well, my manager said - then had all my buying decisions taken away. Result... decline.

FP in Cambridge used to have a large magazine section right next to the door, you couldn't miss it. Now they've moved it to the back of the store and it's half the size. The whole place seems dominated by action figures and other merchandise now.

It's really in freefall now... I picked up a few bargains today. A couple of the Dark Tower comic compilations, and Robert J. Sawyer's "FlashForward". Still, bargains aside, it's sad to see a giant in the British book market on its way out.

Ah, excuse my language here...but it is such shite to see another bookstore I love go. Can't express my anger enough. Sitting in the Starbucks with a pile of books in the Islington Borders has been a tradition of mine for the last couple of years.

The closing day is 24th December, assuming no one steps in to buy the company before then. If there's anything you want from the shops, get it before then.

I popped in at the weekend, Marc, and it was pretty busy. There was still plenty on the shelves but it's shifting fast. I spotted a pile of White Stripes cds but didn't fancy the queue on Saturday, and by Tuesday they were all gone. It's probably worth a look, but don't be surprised if he can't find anything on the list. Still plenty of Interzone 225s, though.

And Andy was good enough to send out my replacement 225 with BS, so I shall soon be sortes on that score, cheers

I got Icky Thump from play.com for £3.99 a few weeks ago, but it's back up to full price now. It's pretty fantastic. Even the bagpipes.
