I get sent CDs to review for a couple of websites; pretty soon you get accustomed to the idea that four out of five of them are going to be average at best. Every now and again, though, something lands in your CD player and completely blows you away.

I'm talking about Backlash Cop, the new album by Jetplane Landing, a band that up until now I was utterly unaware of. Image, if you will, putting RATM and the Chilli Peppers in a blender; then transporting Fugazi and At The Drive In back in time and space so that they grow up in Ireland, and forcing them to drink the aforementioned musical smoothy twice daily. Then you get them to make a concept album that seems to be based loosely around the concept of the greatest black jazz and funk musicians of history replacing the major political movements and figureheads of the last seven decades of American politics.

That description goes nowhere as an effort to really get across what this album sounds like, or how catchy and energetic and downright f*cking excellent it is. The only thing that will accomplish that is you listening to it. And if you've ever had the slightest interest in intelligent guitar music at any time in the last twenty years, you should do that as soon as it gets released.

Evangelism over. Thank you.

Their first two records were both excellent, but I'd heard that they were going in a different direction with this one (their first release in over three years!). Good to hear that it's as special as it should be. :)

'Once More Like A Spark' and 'Zero For Conduct' also come highly recommended, though the latter is more traditional guitar-based indie rock and the former is similar with added rawk.
