Listening to the new Fall album, "Re-Mit", which I feel is more immediately accessible than the previous "Ersatz GB" but not quite as unrelentingly good as "Your Future Our Clutter". Caught them live in Norwich last night and as usual spent the first song wondering what I was doing there and then got caught up in the almost primal relentless repetition of the music coupled with the fascination of watching Mark E Smith wander around like a dementia patient escaped from a nursing home. Very surprised to hear "Theme From Sparta FC" amongst the new material played, and the gig ended anarchically (without Mark) as audience members took over the microphones and were manhandled off stage whilst the band played on.

Support were from Dingus Khan - you must see this band live - and another band who were instantly forgettable.

I never understood the attraction of The Fall, myself - even when Peel was raving about them...

Ray Charles' "Smack Dab In The Middle"; tapping my foot while I get some work done.

Even though I have the vinyl version in the loft, I couldn't resist buying the rebooted version of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" reduced from £13 to £4. Not listened to it all the way through, but apart from a change of cast, there seems to be some special effects noodling going on.

The original is fab. What on Earth made him change near perfection...?

I know, I love Chris Thompson singing "Thunderchild" and he appears as a backing singer on this version. I reckon in twenty odd years it will be recast again with Jason Statham in the Burton part, and Harry Stiles as Justin Hayward.

Radio Scotland have a great show weekdays from 6pm to 8pm called "Get It on", usually hosted by Bryan Burnett, but he's on other duties this week. On Monday the theme was the great outdoors and the second song they played was "Wide Open Space" by Mansun which I'd never heard before but can't get it out of my head. I'd never heard of them. Were they any good, and what else would people recommend by them?

Wide Open Space is from one of the best debuts ever - Attack Of The Grey Lantern - which I can't recommend highly enough. Their next album Six was a deliberate attempt to do something totally different, and is not an easy or enjoyable listen. Their third album Little Kix is also brilliant - highly recommended. If you fall under the Mansun spell, check out the end-of-career retrospective Kleptomania.

There've been various reports of chief Mansun-ite Paul Draper writing new stuff for a new band, but nothing definite...

Caught the mighty "Clutch" last week in Glasgow and picked up their latest album "Earth Rocker" which as the title suggests is rockier than their normal fare.

I particularly like the title track, which has a line in the chorus that sounds something like: "Booowharrrrrrr!"

Anyone else like The Flaming Lips? I've been steadily working my way through their back catalogue and absolutely love "Embryonic". They've started to remind me of The Residents.

I've seen The Flaming Lips on tv, complete with dancing animals. I'm familiar with 'Do You Realise?', which is a real heart-stomper, so I assume they're not as fun as they look live! Or is DYR a one off?

I'm acting like a teenager and playing Perfume Genius' new single 'Queen' over and over. Blooming marvellous.

The dancing animals were what brought me to them in the first place :)

They can be poppy and catchy, but also experimental and weird!

Ah yes, if they're reminding you of The Residents, then TFL must definately have some interesting wierdness about them...

Really enjoying the new albums by "Warpaint" and "Mastodon" and some old-fashioned metal by "Grand Magus".
