The Cause:The Effect by Veldt: followed the links at the end of forumite and IZ subscriber Mike Alexander's posts and found something described as Scott Walker being mugged by Portishead, and I can't think of a better way of describing it than that. Very, very nice indeed.
Puddle City Racing Lights by Windmill: little bit Arcade Fire, little bit Mercury Rev, little bit Flaming Lips... Wonderful!

Well, there you go - further proof that science fiction and prog-rock are inseparable! I got sent a bunch of CDs to review, one of which is On Letting Go by a young band called Circa Survive. It too is prog, though a kind of emo-ish prog, and it's really rather good.

Most recent purchases are:
Maximo Park - "Our Earthly Pleasures" - Excellent band brimming with energy, this album gets better with every play.
Blonde Redhead - "23" - Very difficult to describe this band, but I love 'em. I thought their previous album, "Misery Is A Butterfly", would take some beating, but this album comes very close to topping it and may well end up the favourite.

I'm currently listening to the two most recent Scott Walker albums, Tilt and The Drift. Both incredibly bleak and powerful. Someone described them as "the sound of the end of the world, and you're the only person left alive". It's not a bad description. Nothing at all like his early stuff - even his singing style seems to have changed, and on The Drift, additional percussion is provided by a man hitting a dead pig. Not easy albums to listen to, but certainly worth it.
Also falling back on anything by Tom Waits to cheer myself up when Scott Walker gets too much.

I'm going through a St James Infirmary Blues ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James_Infirmary_Blues) phase, although this time because it's "inspired" me to write a piece of fiction. My favourite version to date is actually the Jools Holland/Tom Jones version from a few years back. OK, I'm a philistine and I'm aware Holland (who's an ok guy based on a five minute aquaintence, btw) has probably borrowed someone else's arrangement, but I love the almost rousing arrogance of it. Louis Armstrong also did several great versions.

Oh, and DeConstructive Screwdriver Criticism of course, whose 'Transmission 3' you can currently hear on Black Static's MySpace (a work in progress!).

I'm a bit late to this one, but those that like their music fiery and fused could do worse than check out Jetplane Landing's latest, Backlash Cop.
Other recent acquisitions are The Flatliners and Protest the Hero, but these may be less to the taste of my fellow Interactors!

Better late than never - I've been evangelising about that album since I reviewed it a handful of months ago. Pure genius.
Currently indulging in a "nothing to review with an immediate deadline" moment, and rocking it old-school to the best of Curve - a band who were way ahead of the curve as far as anti-macho industrial fifteen years ago, and frankly still sound fresh today.
