Interesting comments, Roy. I have often wondered about word and line counts myself. Would a judge REALLY discount a brilliant poem if it were 41 or 42 lines long instead of 40? It rather reminds me of the Prince or Emperor who told Mozart his music had too many notes.
I can well understand the desire to avoid the epic amateur, but surely that could be done with a cursory read of the first fifty lines or so?

I presume it's self censorship Marion. If it's 42 lines long and a competition's limit is 40 you don't bother sending it in, especially if it costs £7 for the privilege.
