And thank you, Des, for such a lovely and super-speedy review

Only read a couple so far. Loved 'Cracks', and Ingold's 'Silver City' one was one of my faves from last year's Interzone. I think I must be fan.
And loving the animation Des has added to his real time review.

That's the Black Static fly, as per the cover of the first issue. Andy's been looking for that for ages. Des, how'd you get it?

Here's my views on BS#28:
Enjoyed the usual columns and reviews (although as I don't watch much TV Mike O'Driscoll's new column is completely lost on me).
"The Pest House" - richly evocative, chilling, ultimately perhaps just a tad unlikely to be 'true', I throughly enjoyed this opening story. Funnily enough I'm proofreading another book at the moment which contains the bird-like plague mask. Something that needs to be seen to be believed.
"Cracks" - Enjoyed this too. There's a surreality here that is both comic and unnerving, a twist in reality - bug-spray induced? - that pulls the rug and memory from these characters. Being open to interpretation adds to this tale, although some might want it more tightly sewn.
"The Ballad of Boomtown" - Guilt trip of a story, sharply written, characters keenly drawn. I felt the witches element a little shoe-horned into the piece with the one-off extract from Songs Of Stone, but nevertheless it's a piece that works well with a quietly devastating ending.
"Pale Limbs" - I like Kaysen's stories. They're always a bit of a puzzle and the more you work out the puzzle the more you realise that the puzzle you thought you picked up is a different kind of puzzle. It's a bit like taking the bars of a cage apart only to realise that in doing so you've built the cage around yourself. This story is no different. Each character is unreliable in their narration - your mind hops from one to the other as to who you believe. Ultimately all truths might be possible. For me, no conclusion is the perfect end to the story.
"The Messenger" - Another strong story from Joel. He really makes every word count and there's just as much detail and depth in this story as the longer ones that have come before it. A great ending to what has been a very good issue.

Brilliant expression.

There's an American in your midst--I'm new to the forum.
Just wanted to pop in and say that issue #28 might be my favorite so far. (Granted, I only learned about Black Static with #24.)
Much respect to Mr. Ingold. "Cracks" was a nearly perfect story, and I don't use that word lightly. I expect it to be in Datlow's Best of #5 next year, among other anthologies.
The other four stories were all fantastic, as well. Top-notch.

Thanks, Michael! And if there was any ... gap ... between Cracks and a perfect story, it was part of the design. best jon

Hi to everyone- I'm new to the forum and to Black Static.
Des and Andrew- thanks for the comments on The Ballad of Boomtown. Also a big thanks to Richard Wagner who stepped in with an illustration at the last minute (your house was much better architecturally than the one I'd pictured!).
I've not had a chance to sit down and read issue 28 yet- am looking forward to a bit of quiet time this weekend.
I know Ilan Lerman from previous mags we've both been in (Hi!) and Ray and I have exchanged a couple of emails (bring on the Christina Rossetti/Angela Carter.)
