I've been wondering for some time now if we should have the occasional horror magazine review in Black Static. I didn't in the past, as The Fix had it covered, but that appears to have fallen by the wayside.

I'd imagine something like one per issue, or the occasional cluster under the Case Notes umbrella.

Thoughts anyone?

Excellent idea, especially as many readers will be writers, so the more exposure of other magazines the better regarding scoping a potentially new venue.

Also I'm a sucker for the short story form and would like to see the support of other markets in this way as there isn't an awful lot out there with the staying power of TTA publications. A good review could lead to increased sales making the magazine happy, writers happy, and readers! And the naff ones shouldn't be wasting our time, so deserve the review too. (Or maybe I'm giving reviews too much power in that little scenario...?)

Are you thinking just horror story magazines or horror in a wider genre sense?

No, no, no - the idea is to trash the opposition

I'm thinking primarily of short story magazines, but wouldn't rule out the occasional foray into the non-fiction side of horror publishing.

Black Static already trashes the opposition by being so much better

I think it would be an interesting addition to the current review section. If it's just one per issue, however, maybe it could be accompanied with a mini-interview or mag background info. "Magazine Spotlight" for example?

It might be interesting to see some horror mags reviewed.

Don't really mind, though, as I'm kind of attached to the reviews format the way it is.

But maybe I'm just an owd stick-in-the-mud. :D

So an either-way vote, which I would add to the poll, but my computer won't let me. It's bossy like that.

I did consider that, but while it's fine in theory not too sure about the practicality, partly for reasons of space, but also because my review might not be flattering, which could make interviewing the editor a bit iffy.

I have the same consideration with the author feature, and some of the people I interview are actually second or (once) third choices, simply because I didn't like the first choice as much as I expected to. I don't want to put myself in the situation where I interact with somebody during an interview and then, when the magazine turns up, they find that I've trashed the book. It seems slightly underhand to me.

With magazines, I'd prefer not to be inundated with titles, as I am with books. Rather, my feeling is that the right way to proceed is to ask a publisher to send something on the understanding that it will be reviewed, though not with any guarantee of a favourable result.

Of course we do have the option to follow up/expand on any review by posting material to the website.

I'd love to see some horror magazines reviewed. I'm always on the lookout for a good horror magazine. Assuming there are any out there other than Black Static.

A thumbs up from me for horror magazines to be reviewed in Black Static. Its very possible many of your readers are unaware of the existance of other magazines . I'm sure readrers would welcome news of their existance along with review of contents.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I'd prefer you not to reduce the space for the stories as a result?

We have Morpheus Tales pencilled in for April 2012 and Shadows & Tall Trees for June.

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself here, but if anyone has a magazine that won't be antiquated by August and they can get a copy to me by mid-July (either hard or an e-copy), then the August 2012 slot is going spare.

A reminder - the magazine's content has to be mainly, though not exclusively, focused on horror and I will consider online publications.
