Not a review as such, but I've just posted to the website a video of author Mick Scully (who will be reviewed in Black Static #2) doing a reading from one of his stories.

I've posted some more reviews to www.ttapress.com - "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Brooks, which complements the review of "World War Z" in the magazine, and "Nietzsche's Kisses" by Lance Olsen, which is about a year overdue. To egg the pudding I've also posted some Nietzsche snark on my blog here:-

Now that we have three issues of Black Static under our belts, does anyone have an opinion on the Case Notes section?
Do you like the author features, with factoids and Q&A, as well as review(s)? How do you feel about thematically linked clusters? Good idea or should we go back to just standalone reviews? What about the sidebar factoids? Interesting or waste of space?

I think standalone book reviews following an author interview is the best format.

And I really enjoy the sidebars. Speaks to the inner Google.

Resoundingly interesting and prefer this format to stand alone reviews. Bought the first four at Derby yesterday. Spent the whole of Sunday morning in bed refusing to get up, drinking tea and reading them. Black Static. Love it!

Thanks (somewhat belatedly) for the feedback Tony, Steve and Allyson.
A couple of new reviews that didn't make it into the magazine have just been posted to the website at www.ttapress.com and they are "Earthbound" by Richard Matheson and "Banquet of the Damned" by Adam L G Nevill.
Enjoy.

The whitenoise@ttapress.com address can be used if anyone wants to query me with regard to a possible book review in Black Static.
I'm not in a position to guarantee anyone a review - that depends on factors like how much time I have for reading, what I feel best fits in with a particular issue and the space Andy has in the magazine for reviews.
I can, however, tell you whether or not I'm interested in seeing a title, so you won't have wasted a review copy if I'm not.

Pete,
Nice review of The Absence by Bill Hussey. I didn't notice any particular reference to the epilogue in your review and I wondered what your opinion of it was. For me I didn't like it and I felt it turned a five star book into a four star.

Yeah, the Epilogue didn't do much for me either, one of those cliched horror moments, and obvious what it was going to be as soon as you read 'nine months later'.
I agree it would have been better without, but it didn't seriously detract from my enjoyment, not from 5 down to 4 anyway, and I'd pretty much forgot about it until just now. Maybe 4.75...
So how does it compare to his first book, Ross or anyone else?

I prefered the first book. I felt it had stronger characters but I enjoyed them both. Not really sure where the Barker comparisons come in though. When I went to the guys signing at Gloucester Waterstones I got a copy of Echoes, a collection of three shorts from the guys behind horrorreanimated. Bill Hussey's story was a very effective Jack the Ripper era tale.

His writing didn't remind me of Barker at all. The only way I could understand the applicability of that quote, was in the sense of 'the next big thing from the UK', Barker being the last as far as Horror goes, but that's stretching it a bit and then some.

I haven't posted to this thread in a while, and not sure why. So, an announcement :-
Our Case Notes featured author in #15 will be Alexandra Sokoloff, with reviews of "The Harrowing" and "The Price", plus interview and anything else we can think of.
You may get excited.

Oh, haven't posted to this thread in ages.
Next issue, #22, I'm going to try something different - two short(ish) interviews instead of one long one, and the names in the frames are Steven Pirie and Tim Lees. Both have been published in Black Static and both have second novels out, "Burying Brian" and "Frankenstein's Prescription" respectively. It's the kind of symmetry that appeals to me.
