I had the opposite perspective on that (everyone having their own biased perspective, of course

). I thought that - apart from the extreme gore in the story - the characters, and their attitudes, were quite familiar from some of Meloy's other stories. In particular, "All Mouth", "Dying in the Arms of Jean Harlow" and the story "Islington Crocodiles" have that especially British milieu of scummy individuals.
