Two weeks ago I read Mr Sanford's 'Memoria,' in the issue of Interzone largely devoted to him. Like his 'Plague Birds,' it is a philosophical story, filled with concepts and thoughts about them, embedded in the plot and essential to it. All its concepts are important to philosophy, psychology psychotherapy and justice, but none of them are developed at length. I think this is brilliant. The reader's interest in several important notions can be whetted by reading 'Memoria' attentively. All concepts concern memory. We have trauma, memory of criminal acts, memory as essential (or not) to personal identity and redemption by doing good deeds which involve memory change and memory loss. Two ideas came to mind. (1) What sorts of events need a given person remember, in order to understand that he or she is one, temporally continuous human through some interval, not (say) a person who has embedded false thoughts that refer to a time at which that person did not exist? (2) The redemption in 'Memoria' is totally different from whatever might result from applying retributive justice by punishing a convicted criminal primarilly for revenge. The 'correction' is a public service, the criminal realises this, he or she sacrifices something important, and does not mind that at all. I think but am not sure that Mr Sanford believes that this can result in reformed behaviour. I like my take, although I do not know if any of this accurately captures what the writer wished to express.

That's a great writeup on this story George. Must check out this one. I have appreciated several of Jason Sanford's stories, which have been some of my favorites in previous issues of interzone.
