From a review of 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' in IZ242:

Quote:
If you didn't know, you'd never believe that such a character, and such a relationship, could have been written by a woman; but at least it shows that anything guys can do, women can do worse.

OK, well this woman's lost for words right now. I'm reduced to - WTF?!!! (And it's the first time I've actually said that.)

I'm assuming that isn't a woman reviewer...

Rather harsh, to say the least!

Oh dear.

Men and women can write great stuff. Men and women can write shite. Fair enough. But surely men and women can write about any character in any relationship?

Mind you, I shouldn't be sticking my oar in - not read the review yet.

And don't even start me on "worse". As if one writer can stand for an entire gender/sex anyway.

There, that's my other oar. Chucking them both overboard now and drifting...

He's saying that Keira Knightley's character is a typical movie male wish fulfilment fantasy type - the beautiful young lady who takes an inexplicable interest in a middle-aged man, who cares more about sleeping with him than her own life - and the reviewer's surprised to see a woman producing that kind of inherently sexist stuff. Maybe he's wrong to be surprised to see a woman writing something sexist, but I don't think it's problematic for him to express that surprise...

I think it is a problem, when a specific scenario - of an individual woman writing a poorly judged character or situation - is generalised onto the entire population.

As a statement it is at best poorly judged in its own right.

Right, sorry - I was just looking at the first bit.

Ah no, I do hope you're right and that's the way it was intended. It came across to me more negatively though, and I suspect it will to other readers too. Trouble is, it's the kind of thing that could impact on the way people view the magazine.

There's something about that 'women' vs. the pallyness of 'guys' that made me uneasy, too - it sounds all, 'it's a boys' club, love - move along.'

As I say, I hope you're right, but if that was the idea it should really have been better expressed.

Oh lord, and now I see in a review of 'The Victim' in Black Static 30:

Quote:
The last twenty minutes or so promote confusion as The Victim bursts its plot seams with ugly bloat like some flabby tart squeezed in a bodycon dress two sizes smaller than required.

Erm - is it *really* necessary?!
