IZ showed up in central Texas on Monday, May 21. That's almost two weeks earlier than I was expecting it.

I'll start making the rounds of area bookstores in the next few days to keep an eye out there as well.

Contacted me today and said they received their ten copies of IZ 210. The reading for my story will probably happen in June.

I'll be sure to get pictures of the crickets chirping. :)

Thanks again, folks.

Respects,

Andy, I have no idea. There should be digital pics of the event.

The way my voice sounds, you should hope it isn't recorded.

Odd, second person to ask me that today. :)

In chicago today. Hooray!

How'd you go about arranging for a reading, SFM? I'm trying to think of ways to promote locally, and that seems a pretty good one.

In March I did a reading of my upcoming IZ story "Ne Cadant in Obscurum" (among other works) at a university literary forum at which I was the featured author. It went over well enough, but happily for the world, there were no recorders to capture the sound of my Midwestern twang ...

Here is the story, Tim.

Back in April I read in the local alt paper, The Pitch Weekly, about MAC. The little blurb mentioned that they would have international titles (it mainly concentrated on fashion stuff that I didn't care about but some people do).

On a lark, I gave them a call and here is how the conversation went.

"Do you folks carry Interzone? It is a science fiction magazine?" I asked.

Woman on phone asks real quick and comes back, "Yes, we're planning on that starting in May."

I replied, "GREAT! I'm in that issue. I'll be sure to come down and get a copy!"

I hung up and didn't think anything more of it.

Turns out the husband of the owner is a former fellow creative writing student from Fall 2004 with Terri Lowry (who is Longview Community College's Creative Writing Instructor and I'm one of her groupie students). He had been watching my blog and waiting to see if I'd finally sell. When I announced back in January that I did sell to Interzone, he made plans with his wife to carry the magazine.

He told all of this to me in an e-mail after he left a comment on my blog after my first MAC mention.

And he offered to host a reading.

I remember being stunned and light headed. I'm still "nobody" in literary terms and more known for my flamewars than my fictional ability. I hesitated on how to respond and basically said, "Umm, I'll get back to you."

Terri literally kicked me in the pants and said, "When someone offers to host a reading, the proper answer, Steven is to say, 'yes.'"

I got back in touch, made a visit to the shop (I've made three) and now that the ten mags are in that Andy sent them in support (Thanks, again for that, Andy. They've sold three already that I'm aware of) we set up a date.

Thursday the Fourteenth of June at 7 pm. It'd be sooner, but I've just quit my job and I'm due for a road trip to Texas to finally see the ocean from a real beach.

So, umm, Tim, I didn't really have to do anything. For once (actually, twice, if you count helping John Birmingham with Final Impact) things just fell into my lap.

To be fair, I understand your frustration, Tim. I'd been hammering on local Borders stores based on info from this board and had virtually no joy out of them. They aren't impressed that a local writer is in it (who are you?) even when I pick up the aforementioned Final Impact and SHOW THEM my name in the back on the acknowledgements.

Tell you what, Tim. Why not come down to KC and read part of Toke? I really don't want to do this all by myself. I've got one local writer who just sold to Jim Baen's Universe I'm going to try and get in touch with, but if there are regional IZ writers within striking distance, why not come here?

Don't know if it is doable for anyone. But I'd be willing to clean up my dump of an apartment (needs cleaning anyway) and set a visitor up on the futon providing they bring their own bedsheets.

There you go.

How am I going to record this thing? I'm such a luddite. The last recording device I used was a cassette recorder back in the 1980s. Suggestions?

Be neat if I could find someone with a camcorder who'd load it onto YouTube. That'd be sweet.

Respects,
S. F. Murphy
