Unfortunately, stories published in Interzone aren't eligible for the Nebula Awards, which to me is silly, since online magazines from Britain are eligible, but print magazines aren't. I mean, WTF? Still, I just nominated "Sinner, Baker, Fabulist, Priest; Red Mask, Black Mask, Gentleman, Beast" by Eugie Foster for the 2009 Nebula for best novelette. Because her novelette was reprinted in Apex Magazine after it's Interzone appearance, it is eligible.

This is a great story and I urge people to read and consider it for a nomination (if they are SFWA members). For more info on nominating stories, and my other nominations, go to http://www.jasonsanford.com/jason/2009/11/nebula-award-nominating-period-opens.html.

I agree that was a really good story; it was also podcast on Escape Pod recently.

It's good that that and a couple of others are eligible, but I'm with Jason: the rules are silly.

Do I read the rules right: if we upload stories to the website, do they then become eligible?

That's how I read the rules. Once a story is published online, it's eligible. So the sample stories Interzone has reprinted online in the past were eligible.

Really is ridiculous then...

Here's a thought: what about stories available via fictionwise, which are distributed as downloads from the internet -- we are in effect reprinting ourselves in America and on the net, which is just the same as uploading stuff to our own website, so if the latter qualifies why not the former?

Not that I'm asking you these questions, Jason, I'm addressing anyone. ;)

Er, that's a good one...

Here's what the rules say:

Quote:
Works first published in English on the Internet or in electronic form during the calendar year shall be treated as though published in the United States.

Which would tend to indicate that Interzone stories are eligible. *scratches head* Hang on, I'll pop over to the SFWA forums and ask...

Any official word from SFWA on the qualification of Fictionwise stories, Aliette?

Nope. I'll post the moment I get an answer. I'm starting to get the feeling I asked a tricky question...

And the answer's in:

Per the SARC, yes, a work published on the web during the nomination period is eligible for nomination.

Yipee!!! (the only condition, as far as I can see, is that the stories have to have been published on Fictionwise during the nomination period--I mention this since there's often a delay between the publication of the paper edition and the Fictionwise availability).

We need to spread the word on this.

It's also just occurred to me that this makes Black Static stories eligible as well.

Aliette: Thanks for asking the SFWA about this. It's about time Interzone and Black Static stories can be considered for the Nebulas.

Major congratulations to Jason Sanford ("Sublimation Angels") and Eugie Foster ("Sinner, Baker, Fabulist...") for their Nebula nominations in the novella and novellette categories! A great showing for Interzone! Well done!
