I watched The Oxford Murders, yesterday, a British co-production with a Spanish director (Alex de la Iglesia) and transatlantic stars (John Hurt, Elijah Wood), which also features Alex Cox and Dominique Pinon.

Hurt plays a genius mathematician who aims to 'solve' a serial killer case. Cox and Pinon are both great at playing nutters here. The film's barmy, as drama, but entertains in the way that De Palma's farfetched Hitchcockian works never fail to amuse.

Afterwards, though, I thought... so the British whodunit has come to this..?

Anyone got a favourite (old or new) quirky British crime film of that amateur-sleuth-from-academia type?
