Picked this up in Poundland today (they have their Halloween stock out, most of which looks dreadful but you find the occasional gem).

Haven't seen it before, but it stars Jennifer Connolly and I like her work, and it did only cost a pound.

'king love Argento, so I do. This is one of my favourites as well. Apparently Argento handed the chimp a real razor, just to get a better reaction from the humans...

Hmm... Can't help feeling if somebody gave a razor to a chimpanzee to get a reaction out of me, they really wouldn't like the reaction

Nicolodi, who had to deal with the razor-wielding chimp, divorced Argento pretty soon after this. The chimp also bit Connolly when Argento told her get it to face the camera. Now, would you give a straight razor to a chimp who doesn't take direction?

Hope this doesn't put you off, Pete - It's a mind-bogglingly weird film. I don't think the chimp ever worked again, though.

Mind-bogglingly weird sounds good Jim.

I have my own bad chimp story. Back when I was a kid the family was on a trip to Yarmouth, and they had me pose for this photographer down Regent St, who had a pet monkey. Somewhere round here there's a picture of me in short trousers, with my hair all bryl-creemed up, and a monkey perched on my shoulder.

When we walked away we found the ruddy monkey had peed all down the front of my jumper

Cat. With diarrhea. Sitting on shoulder.

Luckily it wasn't my shoulder, but apparently it was my fault as I was the one who was supposed to be looking after my wee brother.

You win on novelty, I win on smell.

Jim, or anyone else, what's Argento's "Cat O'Nine Tails" like? I picked that one up today in Poundland. They must be having a Halloween special on Argento.

I saw 'II gatto a nove code' when I lived in Italy and from what I remember of it (not much I admit, well it's been 38 years!) it was pretty good. It might be interesting to note that Argento's early films were regarded as 'Giallo' which means thriller and were not considered horror (although they were pretty gruesome) The other one to look out for is 'Quattro mosce di velluto grigio' - Four flies on grey velvet, which I think I preferred.
However, the one to get is 'Profondo Rosso' - Deep Red which stars David Hemmings and has an incredible soundtrack to it.
I wonder how these DVDs compare to the original films I saw (in Italian) in an Italian cinema with people passing out, screaming and also running out before the film ended!

Cheers Bob, and thanks for the giallo clarification (I've read about it in books of criticism, even if I haven't seen the films). Supposed to be the forerunner of slasher films, according to some expert whose name I can't recall.

As far as I can remember, the only Argento I've seen is "Suspiria", which I thought was most excellent, and a fascinating documentary/interview shown on C4 a few years back. I may do a double header with "Phenomena" and "Cat" one evening, or wait and see if Poundland get in some more Argento.

I wonder if this ever happens now in our post-torture porn world.

Not seen it, I'm afraid; but if you're going to watch them together I'd advise watching them in the order they were made as his earlier stuff is noticably more ragged around the edges. Never dull, though!

My (very short) review of Cat O' Nine Tails gives the film 7/10.

So far, I've managed to resist buying any of those £1-shop horror DVDs!

I saw Profondo Rosso one New Years Eve and, I'm fairly certain, my daughter was conceived the same night.

Did you watch it in a cinema, Andrew?

Just wondering.

An interesting thought...but no!

As far as I remember a friend taped it and lent it to me, because I don't have it any more. I still have the child, who was ten today. It's probably the only time I can pinpoint exactly when I watched something. It would have been 31/12/1998 and it ended ten minutes before midnight. Anyone else able to pinpoint a particular movie at such a specific time (not counting anything seen in the last week!)

The Argento titles keep showing up in Poundland - today I got "The Bird With the Crystal Plumage" and "Profondo Rosso".
