Any suggestions? Novels? Short story collections? Anthologies? Poetry collections? Non-fiction?

Thanks, Ross, I've only read the Gaiman on your list, and the Shearman collection is on my kindle and I picked up "Whistable" at the WFC. I haven't read "Joyland", but I have read "Doctor Sleep" which was a terrific page-turner, just not that scary, I thought.

I'd answer, but there are three weeks of 2013 left and I expect to get through quite a few more books, albeit very short ones.

Just from memory right now, Helen Marshall's Hair Side, Flesh Side , Lisa Hannett's Bluegrass Symphony, and Nina Allan's Stardust. Oh, and Stewart O'Nan's The Dark Country.

And definitely Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel.

There are bound to be others so I may end up editing this post.

My fave book of the year was The Goldilocks Planet: The 4 billion year story of Earth's climate by Jan Zalasiewicz & Mark Williams.
