Today I got a copy of Roadside Picnic, by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It's a new translation that has all the material that the Strugatsky's wished to publish and shall replace the older English text. I hear that the original Russian text was not accepted by the Soviet authorities (I think Komsomol, the Soviet youth organisation). They wanted a more upbeat ending and demanded that some passages be scrapped or changed. The authors had no choice but to comply.
This new English edition is beautifully produced in paperback, has a Foreword by Ursula K. Le Guin, and an Afterword by Boris Strugatsky. The publisher is The Chicago Review Press.

Keep meaning to get round to Roadside Picnic. My brother-in-law tells me it's very good.
