I liked his work, especially the essays and literacy criticism, and really liked the novel "Duluth" about the city of the same name which was also the same name of the soap opera that you ended up in when you died.
I was lucky enough to meet him at a signing in Glasgow at the late-lamented John Smith's bookshop in St. Vincent Street not long after he had appeared on the "South Bank Show" when he had predicted a stock exchange crash which happened between the show's broadcast and his appearance in Glasgow. We had a laugh about that and he told me he had taken all his money out of the bank and hidden it under the bed.
