I haven't read any Banks in years, and none of his Culture books, but that is a seriously good looking cover.

The Culture books are well worth a look, Pete. I've only read Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games, but they were very good.

Forbidden Planet has Banks doing a signing of this, some time in October. I'll find the details...

Although it has been some time, I've read all of of his Culture novels (bar 'Matter', haven't got around to that one yet) and they are all excellent, my favourite being 'Use Of Weapons'. Can't wait for this new offering. I just wish he'd stick to writing just SF.

I was interested to find out recently that his short story 'A Gift from the Culture' was originally published in IZ#20, and there is talk of turning that story into a film.

Aww Pete, what a treat you have in store if you haven't read his 'Culture' novels, they are excellent. I look forward to reading this new one.

You're probably right Bob and Matthew, and certainly I've enjoyed all the mainstream novels I've read by Banks - "The Bridge", "The Wasp Factory", "Espedair Street". Trouble is, unless he writes a horror novel and his publishers send us a review copy Mr Banks and I won't be communing any time soon.

Only 2 days to go.

Most of the early reviews say this is a return to the form of the first three Culture novels.

Just wish it had about 200 fewer pages...
:? :(
I don't have time for reading such big novels, nowadays.

My copy arrived yesterday, I'm about 50 pages in and things are beginning to pick up pace.

Just finished it. This is easily in the top three (for me) of the Culture novels, and for fans of the series there is a fantastic twist in the very last word.

I read Surface Detail a while ago now - it's come out in paperback and is well worth picking up. Probably my favourite Culture novel, which given that I really like the Culture novels, puts it mightly high in my affections. Actually, I'll go out on a limb and say that it's one of the greatest SF novels I've ever read, containing a blend of horror, action, science concepts and grotesque characters. I found it rewarding on every level. It has the visceral punch of Consider Phlebas, but it also explores the deeper themes of religion and the possible existence of Hell. I'd recommend it to anyone!
