COSTA LAUNCHES THE COSTA SHORT STORY AWARD
Entries open from Monday 16th July to Friday 7th September
Submissions to be judged anonymously
Winner to be voted for by public and announced at Costa Book Awards ceremony
Monday 16th July 2012: Costa today announces the launch of the Costa Short Story Award, a brand new Award for a single short story that will run in association with the Costa Book Awards but be judged independently of the main five-category system.
The new Award is for a single, previously unpublished short story of up to 4,000 words by an author aged 18 years or over and written in English. The author’s primary residence must have been the UK or Ireland for the past three years.
Entry opens on Monday 16th July and closes at 4pm on Friday 7th September. Entries must be submitted online via a dedicated page at http://www.costabookawards.com. Entrants need not have been previously published but publishers and agents may submit entries on behalf of authors.
All entries will be judged anonymously – in other words, without the identity of the author being available to the judges.
A panel of five judges will select a shortlist of six entries which will be revealed in November. The public will then be invited to vote online for their favourite story from the six finalists.
The winner will be announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony on 29th January 2013 and will receive £3,500; two runners-up will each receive £750.

Specutopia is a high-quality speculative fiction magazine that is published on a bi-monthly basis (every two months). It is distributed for purchase via a variety of electronic and epub formats, including PDF, Kindle, Nook, etc. Additionally, one featured story each month (two per issue) is available to be freely read on the Specutopia website. By "speculative fiction," we mean science fiction, fantasy, and the whole range of hybrid and cross genres that cover and combine those genres.
Specutopia is published by Specupress, LLC based in Springfield, Virginia.
Our Goal
Our goal is to produce a magazine of speculative fiction that blurs the artificial line between "literary" and "genre" fiction. We are dedicated to exhibiting writing that clearly fits into the description of speculative fiction, while at the same time displaying beautiful and powerful prose--a skillful melding of art and craft which tells engaging stories in the imaginative and compelling mode of speculative fiction.
Our Philosophy
Good writing is good writing. We don't want to limit skillful and experienced authors from exploring and pushing the edges of masterful storytelling with arbitrary rules based on personal bias. We're interested in stories that are strong, meaningful, and artistic, regardless of tense, viewpoint, structure, or trope. We want stories that will be broadly compelling to discerning readers, not just stories or ideas that appeal to our personal tastes, or happen to satisfy an abritrary list of bullet-points.
We also believe in running an organization dedicated to fairness and professionalism. We strive to be fair, clear, direct, and professional in all aspects of Specutopia, and expect the same from those we work with.
