Someone once told me that if you went back in time (1901) and prevented William McKinley from being assassinated, not only would Theodore Roosevelt cease to be president, but down the road FDR would never be elected into office in order to create The New Deal following the events of The Great Depression. Did you ever wonder what the world would be like?

If you could time travel and prevent something, what would it be? Who would you like to meet?

Ah, but if Theodore Roosevelt hadn't been president then he might not have been in a position to split the Republican party in 1912. Harding, Hoover and the rest of that crowd might never have been able to take power, and this could have avoided the Depression happening altogether. This would have affected other countries around the world, of course. It may have been just enough, for example, to change the outcome of elections in Germany.

Maybe Czolgosz shot the wrong man. If I've learnt anything from science fiction, it's not to mess with the past. However, the person I would like to meet is myself, just so I can present myself with a great big list of winning lottery numbers. So i guess I've learnt nothing.

I'd like to go back and bump off Gavrilo Princip. No WWI, no Nazis, no WWII - and best of all, we might've been spared the music of Franz Ferdinand.

Meet someone, yes, prevent someone dying ... no. Travel back to 1970, save a woman's life ... in 1972 she gives birth to a child who grows up to be another Ted Bundy, or Peter (The Yorkshire Ripper) Sutcliffe. Meanwhile, a doctor who discovers a miracle cure wasn't born in 1973, because Joe married Jill (who wasn't killed when she should have been) instead of meeting Jane in 1972.

Mind you, some things would be the same. World War 1 would have happened with or without Princip's assassination of Ferdinand; if that hadn't started the ball rolling, something else would have. All of which makes me very glad that time travel is only possible in fiction.

I'd go back to when I was about fifteen and go down the local hospital shop. I'd find all of my childhood books that my dad donated to them, and buy them. All those Roald Dahl hardbacks which were the bricks of my happy childhood memories, gone without a by or leave. I'd at least like a chance to say a proper goodbye.

Not that I'm too worried about messing around with time lines--it's pretty much pre-determined, IMHO--I just have extremely modest and self-centered ambitions.

I may also take a trip back to the Isle of White Festival in 1970. I'd bring a warm coat.

Kill baby Hitler... or save JFK..?
Better to save a person, I think.
Remember that mid-1980s' Twilight Zone episode, Profile In Silver, about a time-travelling historian who saves JFK?
Anyone seen movie TimeQuest?

I'd agree with suggestion that time-travel (backwards) is only possible in fiction. If humans invent(ed) 'time-gates' within next 1,000 years, and 'time tourism' became popular, I think today's world would be even more messed up than it already is.

That said, any subgenre stories of the 'time cops/patrol' type are sometimes fascinating to read... It would be interesting, I think, to see a themed issue of IZ, with new stories about time-travel. (What can 21st century's writers do with this old idea? Is it just dead sci-fi now, or are there more interesting twists left to explore?)

I'd like to go back and find the first 'Homo Sapiens' (and I use the term Wise Human or Knowing Human loosely here) that came up with the idea of RELIGION and bring him forward in time to show him what has been done in the name of all the various Gods we now worship...

You just have to annoy them till they go away. cf. John Wyndham's story Pawley's Peepholes.

There was a great Outer Limits time travel episode, one of the newer ones, in which that butterfly effect was explored (well, as much as it could be in 40 odd minutes). The woman was going mad becasue the world kept changing around her due to her efforts, and her mind retained the old info with the new, and the new, and the new...

If I could go back, I'd make a note of what it was called so I could track it down again. I liked that one.

If I could go back...

"Listen Bill, forget Kildall and CP/M, you need to buy a crappy operating system called QDOS from this Tim Paterson guy, and flog it to IBM for their new PC. I promise you, you'll make a fortune."
"Good tip. What's your cut?"
"Oh, 0.5% of all future profits ought to cover it."
