It's been hard for us Brits to get excited about this obviously, but taking a lead from the BBC's promotion -- "which team will you support?" -- perhaps we should have a Euro 2008 sweepstake, which'd give those of us without a decent football team somebody to support. Those who do have a decent football team are also encouraged to join in -- who knows, you might even draw your own team -- as are our friends from outside Europe.

The World Cup sweep was a lot of fun, so I'd suggest the same sort of thing again: 16 entrants paying £5 each (plus, say, a £1 to cover any paypal expenses), teams drawn from a hat, winnings split from 1st to 4th, or 1st to 3rd, or whatever. We need a volunteer banker. Not me again please.

Amendments to any of the above welcome. We need to have our draw done before June 7th!

The teams are:

Group A
Czech Republic
Portugal
Switzerland
Turkey

Group B
Austria
Croatia
Germany
Poland

Group C
France
Italy
Netherlands
Romania

Group D
Greece
Russia
Spain
Sweden

Is there any interest? If so, first 16 qualify. If not, I'm going to be johnny no mates. So, first name:

Andy

I'm up for it Andy.

And am happy to be the banker if you like.

I'm in too. My son Max would also like a go too, as long as he isn't doing someone else out of a punt.

All the best ... Andy H.

Count me in. Although, with my luck, I'll draw a team with no hopes whatsoever (Togo, anyone?) like Sweden or Poland. Or even The Netherlands...

Damn you Andy. I thought I'd escaped this year. For the past three days, I've been fighting not to step in. This is me waving my white flag ...

Well, just so long as I don't get Germany (one too many penalty shoot-outs) :)

Are there any plans about what's gong to happen if we don't get the full 16? If not, I'd suggest we all pick/draw teams, and if no one wins, the money goes to a charity like Amnesty.

How did this work last time, Andy? Did you just get all the names in and allocate the teams randomly?

We'll have to get a crack on, guys - there's only a week and a wee bit to go.

We need 16 names. So far we have:

Andy C
Neil
Andy H
Max H
Vaughn
Jetse
Foxie
Mike A
Jim S

So, we're over halfway there.

You can Paypal your £5 to williamsonnl [at] googlemail [dot] com (or give it to me in cash if you see me in the pub). I'll get a well known local celebrity to make the draw on or before Friday June 6th. Prizes will be split between 1st to 3rd places (say, £40, £25, £15 ?).

I think it'd also be nice for all the contestants to make a prediction as well. For example, I'm going for Spain (again). They've got to win something sometime!

Any more for any more?

A few people have told me off-forum that they'd sign up but I see they haven't done yet. It'd be nice to get some of the world cup sweep winners so we get a chance to win our money back!

Your suggestions sound good to me, Neil. I'll be paypalling my entry free over soon. Will include a bit extra to cover the paypal commissions in and out. Oh, and there was some concern last time about it not being a strictly legal use of paypal, so just in case don't put "here's my stake for the euro 2008 gamble" on the form!

As for predictions, Spain for me too. Maybe this time they will actually do as well as they should. Other than that... Czech Republic maybe, or the winners of the Group Of Death?

Aye, if anyone wants to contribute a few coppers to the paypal commissions that'd be nice, but it's not mandatory.

"Entry free", Andy? That's a typo, of course!

Group of Death. It has to be Romania - everyone else has the curse of Scotland on them. France are emotional wrecks after the qualifiers, and Italy aren't much better, and as for Holland - they're quaking in their orange boots over the WC qualifiers.

It would be very, very nice to see Spain or Croatia win, but I don't think it's going to happen. Portugal I think, but I'd be a fool not to put money on Germany.

But we all know I'm a fool, so I'd like to see Portugal win. That's my pick.

I can't see Croatia winning - they've never even managed to beat Scotland in three attempts. I suspect it'll be France. There's no one left in the competion capable of beating them.
