It's a very odd phenomenon, but I'm a pretty optimistic person who tends not to like overly upbeat stories. Not sure why that is. When I think of all the classic SF that I love (eg Bradbury, Dick, Lem etc.), it nearly always has a dark aspect, and generally a downbeat or at best ambivalent ending. I think there's a strong element of the 'cautionary tale' about much of it - which goes back at least as far as HG Wells' "The Time Machine".
