Independent Review has authors listing their summer reads. As ever, no mention of SF or fantasy or other genre fiction (apart from one literary crime novel). Even Neil Gaiman ignores the field - his summer read is Kipling's Jungle Book. Maybe the tabloid summer reads will be different, but I suspect they will be full of chick lit and self help books (sorry, that sounds patronising, but you know what I mean).

I suspect it may be that some of the literati at least read science fiction and crime novels in secret. A guy I worked for, an artistic director, read highbrow stuff all the time, but his wife joked that he used to stuff SF down the back of the cushions on the couch whenever she or anyone else came into the room.

A secret vice, then?

Maybe we should hold rallies. SF pride. March down the streets with signs that read, 'SF'ers do it in space', 'I understand Quantum theory' and 'SF isn't just Star Wars'. We can stop in coffee shops and have intelligent conversations. We need a logo and a slogan, I think. Any suggestions? :D

You may be on to something there, Foxie. SF pride.

And we could have anti media slogans, too, since they ignore us, like:

YOU ARE WATCHING BIG BROTHER

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU READ THE DAILY STAR (but we can still see your lips move)

Paraphrase my favourite Mark Twain quote:

"The person who does not read SF has no advantage over a person who cannot read."
