Doomsday Men: The Real Dr Strangelove and the Dream of the Superweapon
Peter D Smith
554pp £20.00/$27.95 hb
Andrew Robinson's review states the book includes an analysis of how culture, including SF, influenced science and weapons development.
Unfortunately the full text of the review is not given.
I'll ask if we can post it here or link to the full text in a month or so.

Ah, the charming Mr Smith has sent me a review copy of this very book, which I greatly look forward to reading ... as soon as I have the time to do so, of course. *sigh*

Sorry I'm not volunteering though it certainly looks interesting.
Sounds like one for Paul Kincaid &/or Maureen Speller.
The book apparently links the decisions on using atomic weapons on Japan in WWII to 'yellow peril' pulp SF in the post WWI era, suggesting Harry Truman was partly influenced by Fu Manchu and his ilk. Heavy stuff for SF's shoulders.
