From an email sent by editor-in-chief Rachel Kendall:-

The issue will be guest-edited by the indomitable Rhys Hughes who has come up with the theme:

Sudden Fiction from the European continent

Yes this does exclude any non-European contributors but you will have your chance to shine once more next year. In the meantime, this is going to be a very competitive issue so guys and dolls, you need to send your best.

Once again, please send all submissions to seinundwerdenguest@gmail.com

This is what Rhys says of the theme:

I'm after fantastical/absurdist 'comedies' 1000 words or less.

By 'comedies' I don't mean that they have to be funny: wistful, thoughtful and droll are fine, so are weird and quirky. I'm thinking in a broader definition of the term, in the same way that Nabokov's brilliant Laughter in the Dark is a 'comedy' but it didn't make me laugh..

As an example: the early stories of Kafka and Calvino, Bruno Schulz, Hašek, Daniil Kharms, Zamyatin, Pavić, Queneau, Bulgakov, Boris Vian, Nabokov, etc.

Here are some examples along the lines of the kinds of things I want to receive and include:

Poetry and images are more than welcome. So are brief dramatic 'scenes'.

An addendum to the above from Rachel Kendall:-

Submissions are now open for any pieces with a European flavour (regardless of where the author hails from).

Also, the link included in the last email is the wrong one. Here be the proper one, a link to examples of the kind of writing Hughes favours:

Rhys just posted on Facebook that so far he's only received material from five people that adheres to the guidelines:-

So I guess there's plenty of room left to fill.

Good one! Don't know yet if mine's been accepted.

It meets the criteria, though...

I'm in! Yeah, I know, everyone's sitting up and asking "Who the hell is she? When did she show up here?"

I've been lurking here forever and finally decided to join. I'm too lazy to introduce myself in the designated topic. I write mostly flash fiction, favoring mystery, but I dabble in other genres and lit. I've been reading CrimeWave since the second number.

I'm a transplanted Yank, living in the Netherlands since 1970.

Cheers,
Jonette

Is this still open? Just realised I have a teensy tiny poem that might fit the theme, in fact, it's so small, it might fit anywhere.

Ian

Thanks Pete and Jonette

I actually found 3 poems that might be suitable - or not, so sent those.

Fingers crossed!

Ian

Sent those poems off and they got accepted, either for the print version, or the slightly longer e-edition.
