Whew. Narrowly avoided Spain. So it's you and me now, Jim.

I'm glad to see this man in his mid sixties and who likes Proust doing so well.

Okay, with the end of the group phase, it's time for another roundup. First of all, bad luck to Ross, Andy C, Bob, Mike, Stephen, Ian, Andy H and Darren. Some of you are *very* unlucky not to be going any further this year.

As for the QF match ups:

CZECH REPUBLIC v PORTUGAL pits Vaughan against Des
SPAIN v FRANCE pits Chris against Jim H
GERMANY v GREECE sees Roy take on Max
ITALY v ENGLAND has Jim S up against Lynda

With the exception of Germany v Greece (sorry Max), I honestly think any of these games could go either way.

Gonna be great finding out.

against any other team yes but with the Greeks so fired up over their Euro politics and with them blaming Germany for their troubles I have a niggling doubt about this result. My head says Germany to win but destiny puts Greece in the frame.

I didn't watch tonight's match as it was writer's group night here. But I just saw this on BBC site:

"Portugal will now face Spain or France for a place in the final, and with arguably Europe's best player beginning to show his very best form, they could take some stopping."

yay!

Go, Des! I missed the game too, but watched most of it before coming in to work this morning. (Dedicated? Obsessed? You decide...) Portugal thoroughly deserved their win: they made all the chances, played all the football, and were pretty unlucky not to win by three or four (in fact, check out the highlights...http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18545035 ...it really was that one-sided).

Roy - I admire your pessimism, I really do, but...no. Germany will win.

Starting to resign myself to a disgraceful exit via penalty kicks...

Should have taken off Young and Rooney not Milner and Welbeck.

Sorry. That was possibly a bit tactless of me.

Agree with you Roy. Poor Young was waving a nightmare - that must have been the lowest % pass completion for any player in the tournament. As for Rooney, when someone has the first touch of a donkey in bondage trousers and the mobility of a king-size Ikea wardrobe, they need to go. His form for England has always been patchy and tonight really wasn't his night. Some good performances at the back, including a great performance from a player I loathe. But poor overall. Italy were silky, but they will have to be sharper against Germany.

Got to be honest guys, I thought England acquitted themselves really well tonight. It was a good open game, fairly contested (barely even a free kick in the first half) with good hard tackling but with still enough chances to make it exciting. Well played both teams!

Semis give us:

Chris v Des

and

Roy v Jim

Penalty shoot-outs would be a good sport in itself, i.e the whole match. And the extremes of glory or ignominy for the rest of your life as prize. Which brings me to...
I notice Big Brother had its own match last night: one Birthday Party versus another Birthday Party, where different sorts of scoring go on.

BTW, I think England did marvellously well in the whole competition, compared to expectations.
I can now be single-minded about Portugal. :)
