Since 1986 zombies have been a hot topic in the highly technical academic philosophy of mind. There they are described as being and acting just like humans while totally lacking minds. This is a crisp way of attacking some thorny philosophical problems about mental life. One need not read much of this. One will learn all one needs to know, and get more pleasure, by reading Peter Watts' brilliant and well-informed Blindsight (don't forget the technical supplement).

Somehow, the zombie notion has come to pervade horror media. I doubt that sophisticated philosophy inspired much of this, and I suspect that it's no result of a careful reading by many of Dr Watts' book. Perhaps deep influences are being exerted by those who partially manipulate cultural taste. This article tries to remove my 'perhaps.' It's long-winded but definitely worth reading and pondering. For once I'm taking no position. It is right here.
