A bit more than one hour ago Jonathan McCalmont posted a FB item about the recent arrest of Dr Peter Watts, author of Blindsight, the Rifters books, and many stories. Jonathan got the news from Boing Boing. I'll provide the link. It seems that the arrest had no sufficient motive. He might need financial help. The link to Boing Boing is here: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/12/11/dr ... canad.html .

Watts' two blog posts on the incident:-

If his account is correct, this is incredible.

Typical American attitude, I'm amazed he wasn't shot for maliciously backing away with hands raised...

I would like to suggest that at the proper moment an electronic petition and/or protest note be sent to whoever the proper legal authorities turn out to be. I have no idea of how one goes about such things, nor is my personal state such that I can be of much help. Last night I made a similar suggestion on the BSFA Forum, but that concerned an organisation. So put this on the back burner for now.

I think there will be more than one such action, keep your eye on his blog or any of the SF fan sites

I liftedthis from a response on Peter Watts' blog. It's early days, but there's already a range of responses.
