I've noticed the Irish spelling of whisky quite a lot recently (whiskey) and wondered why?

People get confused.
Whisky = Scottish, Welsh and Canadian
Whiskey = Irish and American
The original spelling is Uisge Beatha (Scottish Gaelic) or Uisce Beatha (Irish Gaelic) both mean water of life.
And of course Scotch is the better of the lot, a beautiful amber single malt with a dash of water.
(And no I ain't an alkie, just a true-blooded Scot  )

Well, slightly unrelated, but I used "whiskey" in the advent story becausde I specifically meant Irish whiskey. It clings to the glass slightly differently than Scotch (which I actualy prefer). It's also a little odd that American whiskey is spelt the Irish way when it is (allegedly) based on the Welsh method.

Bob, that's where we've seen the 'e' spelling recently - in Jo's story. Hah!
Me, I can't stand whisky/whiskey. Brandy is my chosen tipple.
Off topic even more, Pete Townsend dedicated one of his albums to the Brothers Armagnac, who 'saved my life by making the stuff so bloody expensive'.

Have to disagree with joel tho johnny is crap what you want is an 18yr lagavulin. Lovely

I have expensive tastes in alcohol. I tend not to drink much  For preference, neat, well aged Scotch, please. Someone gave me a glass of Balvenie recently and that was lully.
However, my rules for cheap(er) drinking based on extensive research at uni.: Cognac is generally smoother than Irish whiskey which is generally smoother than Scotch whisky. If all else fails, put it on the rocks or in a half-and-half based cocktail.
The smooth rule holds true for the more expensive brands, too, but flavour and quality improves with money. I forget where armagnac comes on the continuum as I haven't had any since 1998  . I may have to buy myself some to find out.
I currently have a bottle of three barrels cognac on the go ('tis the season, Christmas = risk of redundancy). I should have bought the Tesco's own label (other supermarkets and cheaper brands are available).

Last Christmas my wife bought me a bottle of Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky which I've managed to eke out to one more glass before I have to consign the empty bottle to the recycling bag. It's a whisky produced in the Brecon Beacons and is very pale, very smooth and VERY nice 
I just hope I've been good enough in 2009 to warrant another, we shall see!
