I am a Mac user, and I've started work on my second novel using the rather superb Scrivener software. I've been using Nisus Writer, with a great deal of success. My only complaint has been that if I make a massive textual change, say deleting twenty pages in the middle of a story, the thing locks up. Other than that, it's been smoove...

Any recommendations for a PC? I actually don't mind MS Word all that much, but it does become unwieldy to manage and move around in longer documents. I've tried using individual files for each chapter, but that is even worse.

I actually create individual files for each chapter, because I tend to move my timeline/narrative flow around a lot, and then it's just a matter of renaming chapters rather that copy/pasting huge chunks of text in the manuscript. So. I can't help you. Ahem.

Rarely had any Word problems, and none at all since I got my new (faster!) PC.

Also have Corel Wordperfect 8 (which is an old version) that I use occasionally.

Using MS Word make sure you have turned off all the 'track changes' options.

OpenOffice.org is the most popular and widespread of the Office suite alternatives, and has the benefit of being open source and free. The one thing OpenOffice's word processor lacks that Word has is a decent comment function, so I still have to use Word for writing critiques etc.

I use Sonar2 (SpaceJock Software) as a submission tracker. It's pretty good but I can see it getting unwieldy with a lot in it, and it doesn't retain settings like order, column width etc. between sessions, which is annoying. Anyone know of any other free sub trackers?

Sorry for the lack of web links, I'm feeling lazy. A 10-second Google query should find you what you're looking for, though. :)

Been using Nisus Writer Express (the newish Mac OS X version) for three years now. They've really been ironing out the bugs, and I can't remember the last time I had a freeze or a crash. I quite like the Mac-native interface, too.
