Hi,

I have a question. I have two 10,000 word horror novelettes I'm about ready to pitch at the moment. Both original in concept and never done before. I could definitely get them published by an e-publisher (or something around semi-pro rates), but at 10,000 words, the novelette is sooo hard to place. And for these, I'd rather do print.

So for these two particular novelettes I'm looking for a publisher who can print them up into CHAPBOOK FORM - Limited Edition of say 100 or less (I know, hard in this economy). People have been contacting me/PMing me on places like Facebook about one of these novelettes; they're actually anticipating it.

I can guarantee 50 to 100 sales probably, too.

So my question comes down to this: where does one get limited edition novelettes of 10,000 words published in CHAPBOOK form these days?

Only chapbook publisher I can think of at the moment is Ghost Writer Publications, though they call them Penny Dreadfuls:-

10,000 words is not that long. Won't F&SF and most other fantasy and or horror short fiction mags look at that length?

In today's economy, probably not... Most mags are looking for 5k or less.

Even Andromeda Spaceways told me there wasn't anything wrong with the story, it was just too long. F&SF, on the other hand, is usually 99.9 percent rejection most of the time. You might as well not even submit there and save your stamps. Even Gordon Van Gelder admitted so in a Writer's Digest article or some other interview a few years back about F&SF's turn-down ratio. Matter of fact, I'd say 15% of submissions these days to the Big Three are by invite or agented (or Big 5 if you include Ellery's and Hitchcock).

However, there are two horror mags at the moment looking at two other similar novelettes; they were nice enough to give it a browse.

Andy once told me TTA get around 200 submissions a month and if you include Crimewave, Interzone and Black Static they only publish around 80 short stories per year. That includes a few over 15k words but overall only just over 3% are published so the rejection rate must be nearly 97%.

Two years ago, when e mail submissions were allowed, the submissions figure was over 3000 and the rejection rate around 98%. There is lots of competition.

Damien Walter mentions a few possible magazine markets other than 'the big 3' in this blogbut omits Black Static.

(About 400 submissions a month now that Black Static is up and running.)

(And I don't think 10k words is all that long either.)

So 1.7 % are accepted and 98+% not.

I don't actively read horror short fiction, hence no mention for Black Static.

I would suggest 10k is not over long for the big markets like Black Static. But for most online and 'zine markets it will be a bit too chunky.

Serious suggestion - why not try selling them directly onto the Kindle store? There is a strong market for novella length stuff through there I'm told.

Sorry Damien I was just adding Black Static to the titles you listed rather than suggesting you had overlooked it. Faulty wording, no wonder my stories get rejected.

This was one option I had considered. A last one, mind you, but definitely one of them. I'd even talked to an artist friend of mine about making a cover if need be. Still, at any rate I might as well sell it to a digital start-up then for 2 or 3 cents per word or 40% net/gross.

If all else fails on these two particular pieces, I will look further into it, however.
